On the wrong roof, a full slab of snow releasing at once can tear off gutters, bury a walkway, or hurt someone. Snow retention holds it in place so it melts and sheds in a controlled way. We size and place it to your pitch, your material, and what is below the eave.
Ice dams form when heat escaping the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eave. The fix is part detailing and part heat: ice and water membrane in the right places during a re-roof, plus heat trace where the roof geometry makes dams unavoidable.
Heat tape, also called heat trace or heat cable, is self regulating cable that keeps a drainage path open through eaves, valleys, and gutters so meltwater has somewhere to go instead of backing up under your roof. Done well it is nearly invisible. Done badly it is an eyesore that trips your breaker. We do it well.
When snow and ice pile up, there is a right way to get it off a roof and a wrong way. The wrong way, aggressive shovels, metal tools, and a crew that does not know roofing, gouges the shingles and tears the flashing, and you trade an ice problem for a leak.
